Development of interface technologies to improve bond strength of adhesively bonded or painted components in the aerospace, automotive and steel industry

  • aeronautic industry: increase of bond strength on titanium and carbon fibre reinforced plastic substrates (CFRP) of adhesively bonded parts
  • automotive industry: reduction of failure rate of painted thermoplastic surfaces (polypropylene) compared to state-of-the-art process flaming
  • steel industry: bond strength and durability of stainless steel and organic pre-painted galvanised steel for industrial applications, e.g. lightweight construction, assuring process stability and improved adhesion

Equipment development

  • atmospheric pressure plasma lab scale equipment used for process development of interfaces by chemical surface modification or surface coating to improve bond strength on flat substrates
  • in parallel a technology head has been developed being designed for robot based use for processing of big 3D shaped components

Process development

  • coating of Titanium with SiOx: bond strength and durability close to industrial reference (which must be substituted)
  • aerosol assisted DBD plasma treatment of pre-coated stainless steel: improves adhesion to thermoplastic polymer foils for sandwich panels - cohesive failure in the polymer film
  • SiOx coatings on stainless steel: fulfil the requirements for adhesive bonding using the atmospheric plasma coater head device
  • activation and surface modification of CFRP: bond strength of adhesively bonded specimen match the requirements being set up by aviation industry
  • activation of PP material for painting: sufficient with max. distance between plasma head and the substrate of 7 cm with a treatment speed of 20 m/min
